The next time around

I will be easier on myself.
I’ll know more. Like how to change a diaper. And soothe a colicky baby.
Breastfeeding will not kick my ass. And if it tries to, I will not be afraid to exercise my resources.
I will ask for help.
And when it’s offered to me, I’ll accept help. And meals. And visits.
A little pal (who CANNOT WAIT to hold her baby brother or sister) will keep me company.
I will recognize the symptoms of PPD and do something about it. And if I can’t see it creeping up, my husband will.
I’ll lean on the miraculous network of people who already have boosted me and this baby up onto their shoulders.
I will try my hardest to relish every sweet moment with my new child.
I’ll go outside. Take the baby for walks. Get some sun on my face.
When someone offers to hold the baby for a while, I will march myself upstairs and take a nap.
I’ll have YOU in my corner.
I will be easier on myself.
The next time around.

It’s a very calming feeling sometimes to think about the second one and how we have a chance to “do over” some of the regrets we have from our first.

reminds me of my approach when i encounter boat difficulties (and there have been more than expected lately…but better now and the last few months than from now on with spring right around the corner): “you’re tough, but i’m tougher”
as of yesterday all systems on cavu (bayliner express cruiser) are working better than ever because of the above approach and excellent support from my marina which is sort of comparable to your more personal support system…even though i know i am tougher than these bugs that creep into my boat’s workings, i still need outside support to knock them out which is what i hear you saying in this post…cavu is an acronym for: ceiling and visibility unlimited…sounds like your outlook from this post…so proud of you…lots of love always

I feel like I could have written every single word of this – it is just PERFECT. I’ve got #2 due to arrive in 6 weeks or less and this post is something I will keep coming back to read until I deliver. And after I deliver. It is so encouraging. Thank you for writing it. And what a precious picture before the post. Wishing you the very, very best experience with your new little one. 🙂

Suzanne, just letting you know I love this piece you wrote so much that I reference it in my blog post tonight. It’s the first piece of writing i found on PPD last winter when I went through it… thanks for writing it!
