PPD symptoms: one size does not fit all

People ask me all the time, “How did you know you had postpartum depression?” and “How will I know if it happens to me?”

These are difficult questions to answer because the experience is unique to the individual. For me, it was an overwhelming sense of hopelessness, excessive crying, insomnia and some intrusive thoughts. Others with the same diagnosis could have completely different sets of symptoms.

Which is why I love this post by Katherine Stone over at Postpartum Progress. She explains “in plain mama English” the many and varied symptoms of postpartum depression and anxiety. And she wraps up the post with critical links to support organizations and treatment programs.

My favorite line, to mothers who suspect they may have postpartum depression or anxiety: “…you are NOT alone and you are NOT a freak and you are NOT highly unusual.”
