Happy Birthday, dear Mom

My mother is pretty amazing.

When I was growing up, she worked all day then came home and cooked us dinner every evening without fail.

I remember her standing over the stove in her 80s power suits, barely getting a break from her first job before sliding into her second one. It was important to her that we all eat together. Those meals were my favorite part of the day, even when I was an obnoxious teenager. There was something very comforting about the ritual. Dinner kept us connected.

Now that I have a kid (just one!) I am ever in awe of my mom.

How on earth did she do it all?

Mom also happens to make a mean meatball. She taught me important stuff, like how to camouflage a zit with makeup and the fine art of bargain shopping. Her money-saving abilities are legendary.

I’m so glad she and my dad live nearby. I’m discovering as I become a grown-up (emphasis on “become”) how much I enjoy being daughter and friend.

Happy birthday, Mom!

I love you.
