Small Fry's new favorite word (and mommy's latest cause for a glass of wine)

Friday at breakfast:

Small Fry (after half a mini-bagel and two bites of strawberry): I’m finished.

Me: Okay. Please eat just three more pieces of strawberry.

Small Fry: Why?

Me: Because they’re good for you.

Small Fry: Why?

Me: Because they have lots of good stuff in them. And they’re yummy. Just three bites.

Small Fry: Why?

Reaching for a strawberry to demonstrate their yummy-ness, I knock over my glass, sending orange juice all over the table and floor. I dash for a towel and end up under the table mopping up the mess.

Small Fry: Why are you on the floor, Mommy?

Me: I spilled my juice!

Small Fry: Why? Why did you spill your juice?

Me: Because I just did. It was an accident.

Small Fry: Why?

  1. Ha! I love it. Sorry about the spilled juice.

  2. Oh lordy, I know that’s coming! Hope you got that glass of wine my friend.

  3. Oh boy. I ended up embracing the “why” after I just started making things up. Like, ” you’ll want to eat the strawberries so you’re nose will will get pink and red just like their color.” Makes for an interesting look on their face as well.

    • Brilliant! I am totally going to start having fun with this. Because it’s not going to end anytime soon, right? πŸ™‚

  4. You hope not πŸ™‚

  5. LOL! Sorry Suzanne. I like Alessandra’s suggestion too!

  6. Sigh. You’re not alone — not that that helps much. The only suggestion I have is to turn the question back — it works sometimes with Pippi. “I don’t why, Pip. You tell me — why?” Also, sometimes I ask her “Why what?” — occasionally that stumps her, or at least makes her explain and say something besides “why?”

  7. I do not look forward to this day.
This will be the day other words are learned.

  8. This makes me smile…and also scares me a little because I know it’s coming!

  9. HA! Solo’s “word” is HUH? Constantly. A thousand times a day… Huh? Huh? huh? And it’s not his hearing, I’m sure of it!

  10. Hee hee…good luck with that πŸ˜‰
