Happiness is: Bella the fur baby

Lily calls her “miss-a-bella.”

Sophie pulls herself across the room just to get a handful of fur.

And we all love her.

Nine years ago today, I rescued Bella from a pound at the end of a rural highway off-ramp. Teeny-tiny, with a bloated belly, potent breath and fuzzy ears, she slept all the way home. Then she ate. And slept some more.

Then she woke up and all hell broke loose. Baseboards, furniture, carpet would never be the same. Neither would I.

I discovered just how sharp puppy teeth are and how to clean vomit out of car upholstery. I learned to care for another living creature, which turned out to be one of the biggest lessons of my life.

A puppy to this day, Bella can jump two feet off the ground to fetch a frisbee. She loves chomping ice, eating poop (but not her own because her palate is discriminating like that), having her belly rubbed and swimming in the ocean. She’ll also lick your knees if you even glance in her direction. She’s a super-lovey love bug.

Happy Special Day, Bella girl.
