About me

Hi there! I’m Suzanne.

Thanks for visiting my little corner of the internet.

Here’s who you’ll meet here: My husband Marc, who has a heart of gold, and our lovely girls, Lily (born in 2008) and Sophie (born in 2011). The fur baby is Bella.

Now that we’ve all been properly introduced, let me tell you why I started this blog.

When Lily barreled into our world, I seriously thought my brain had left my body. I was sure I’d never do anything normal again (in one particularly low moment, I panicked about having time to clip my toenails).

With A LOT of help from family, friends, medical professionals and one very wonderful neighbor, I began treatment for postpartum depression when the baby was about nine weeks old.

Still thanking my lucky stars.

And when I emerged from my fog, I discovered a way to share my experience and help other new moms by writing this blog. It’s evolved into an awesomely random collection of stories, photos, thoughts and stuff I love. But most of all, it’s about motherhood. The joys and the perils.

It took me longer than I’d wished to really fall in love with motherhood. I’m head over heels now. But, I still have  my moments. Like when Lily won’t sleep. Or when we’re stuck in the car for a really long time and all of my singing and dancing (on my head) isn’t working. Or when I get Sophie’s poo under my fingernails.

But swimming underneath all of the frustration and moments of total insanity are these beautiful little glimmers of hope and happiness.

My life IS pretty swell.

Tooting my horn:

In 2011 pretty*swell was voted one of the Top 25 Mental Wellness Blogs on Circle of Moms, and I was named one of the Top 20 Writers on Postpartum Depression by Postpartum Progress. In 2010 the blog was nominated for a BlogLuxe Award in the “best eye candy” category. With this post, I was named a top-10 finalist in the Mabel’s Labels BlogHer ’10 Contest. And in October 2009, I was chosen to be the first-ever North Carolina State Fair Deep Fried Ambassador. Which launched my love affair with chocolate-covered bacon. I won the gig with this post. And here are all of my deep-fried shenanigans.

  1. Suzanne,
Never doubt for a second what an amazing, loving mother you are. Little Fry is blessed and so are you! You too are a great pair! Love you.

  2. Suzanne,

Reading these had me both crying and laughing. Oh how I can relate…motherhood is so hard and there is no easy “How To” book to read that solves everything. Each day and age brings us new challenges. Not to mention, how do we fit in a career? Oh man, it is hard, hard, hard! I admire your bravery and honesty. Thanks so much for posting these…it is so refreshing to read!

    Love,
    Cat

  3. Thanks for being brave enough to share your story! It is so nice to find other Mom’s out there that can be honest about the difficult transition to motherhood. During I’s baby stage I can’t count the number of times I said that I sucked at being a Mother.

You are an awesome person and I am so glad to have met you. I wish we could find the time to get together more often. We need to get the rugrats together. I would love for them to be friends.
