Translation:

Dear Santa,

This year for Christmas may I please have a Periwinkle doll, Lalaloopsy doll house and some furniture to go inside it, that neat vet kit I saw at Marbles, two twin baby dolls just like Caroline’s and one has a skirt and one has jammies, a frosty the snowman doll and a dog because Sophie has one and I don’t. Thank you.

Lily

She didn’t ask for a phone for mommy like last year. Bummer.

Afternoon in the neighborhood

The latest from our friend Cary, who has such a knack for capturing the girls in their element:

Happiness is: Lily's latest self-portrait

Lily comes home from school with artwork every day. They do all sorts of interesting things, like painting with their elbows. But my favorites are usually the ones that aren’t assignments. The stuff she doodles on her own.

She’s into drawing hair on her stick figures now. And coloring eyes.

And apparently, chops and a beard?

I just love this.

American Girl and her trusty sidekick, Fanciest

Last week before the plague hit our little family, Lily decided that she and Sophie were going to dress up as superheroes. Allow me to introduce American Girl. I’ll give you a moment to take in the ensemble:

And check out “Fanciest,” as named by her big sister, battling with her lime-green lei in the background, tutu down to her toes.

Most of our dress-up clothes came from Laura a couple of Christmases ago. She put together a really neat collection of things — including the pink tutu, the “airplane flyer” shirt as Lily calls it, and Sophie’s NYC tee — from one of the thrift shops in town. It’s one of the most clever gifts Lily has ever received, and it continues to fuel her imagination.

And I couldn’t resist throwing in this photo of Sophie in one of her favorite places ever. On sissy’s bed, clutching sissy’s lovey, with another one of sissy’s toys in her other hand. To say that she adores Lily is an understatement.

And when Lily actually allows Sophie into her room, magic happens.

Four going on forty

The stuff that comes out of this child’s mouth constantly surprises me. And makes me smile. Especially when she corrects me (and is usually right).

I always try to write them down. There are little notes with Lily-isms all over the house.

Here are a few recent favorites …

On the weather:

Yesterday the weather told me it was going to be showers. No funder or sebeer weather. Just rain.

On modesty:

Me: You are so smart!
Lily: Yes I sure am.

On current events:

I heard in the newspaper …

Dishing compliments:

Marc: Would you like a banana?
Lily: Sure thing Daddy. You’re a genius!

Me: How do I look?
Lily: You look handsome Mommy!

Hints of teenage-hood:

Me: Don’t forget to wash hands (after potty).
Lily: I always wash hands so you don’t need to tell me a million times!

While snuggling in bed:

Me: I love you.
Lily: I just tooted. ::giggle::

On international travel:

Mommy guess what! When it’s naptime here, it’s bedtime in Italy. Silly Italy.

And a few of my favorite Lily words:

Humonitor (As in, I hear Sophie on the humonitor.)
Hambugger
Mines (That baby doll is mines!)
Ganola bar

I just can’t bring myself to correct her yet, especially with my all-time favorite, brefkiss (breakfast). She is too much.

So cute it's ridiculous

Seriously. How am I not supposed to keep every single one of these photos?

The picture people send home sheets and sheets of ridiculously cute prints and instruct us to send back the ones we don’t want. It’s like waving a cupcake under my nose and telling me to take just one or two bites.

Well played, picture people. Well played.

Behold Lily and Peanut Butter the Pony:

And here’s Sophie relaxing by the beach. In a tiny little beach chair.

A fake rock! This is like a school picture milestone. You simpy can’t move up in the world without having posed at least once beside an artifical boulder or log … or leaning on a fake fence. So I definitely have to keep this one too. Am I right?

These picture people are killing me. Remember the Marshmallow incident of 2011?

Too much awesome.

The ballerina and the bug

Watching your child up on a stage — performing a dance routine, staring out into the audience, picking her nose, whatever — has got to be one of the most exhilarating feelings ever.

I sat through Lily’s dance recital Saturday with a huge perma-grin and tears in my eyes. I didn’t ugly-cry like last year when postpartum hormones took over, but my heart did the same sort of bursting with pride.

Our little dancer was awesome. She had been working especially hard on her bow for the end of the recital, which she nailed. She and her classmates were called the “animal crackers,” and Lily danced with a little crab figurine next to a big cardboard soup-bowl prop. They finished the routine behind the soup bowl, bouncing their menagerie of animal “crackers” along the top. They forgot most all the steps, but it was simply spectacular.

We hollered for Lily at the end, but she didn’t hear us. Next year I’ll be louder.

Here’s our little family just after the show:

And Sophie waving hello:

After a celebratory lunch with family and friends (including a very special chocolate cupcake for the little ballerina), I thought it would be nice to take some more pictures of Lily in her costume at our house. She lasted, oh, about five seconds.

Behold the meltdown:

I probably should have stopped taking her picture, but I just couldn’t do it. She was just too hilarious. The squinty smile-grimace, the dramatic plunge to the ground. I could not stop snapping. Which further pissed her off (bad mommy).

Until she found a bug. And all was right with the world again.

A real smile! Finally!

And one more family shot it would be criminal not to share because just look at Sophie’s legs:

Here comes the flower girl

Before I dig into this post, I need to start by saying that the bride and groom have asked for privacy, so you won’t see their photos or read their names here. What you will see, though, are a zillion more pictures of Little Miss Flower Girl in all her glory.

Sound okay? Great.

Here’s one more shot from the rehearsal dinner because I just can’t resist sharing it. I took it with my phone using Instagram and my favorite filter, Amaro. Doesn’t she look divine? Also: note the sparkly lip gloss. A flower girl must-have, Lily tells me.

And here’s my view from our hotel room bed after the rehearsal festivities. Marc stayed downstairs for a little while to hang out with his cousins while Lily and I hit the sack. Tuckered little girl. (And big girl.)

Wedding day! Lily and I had a ball with the bride in the hours leading up to the wedding. We took pictures, ate chocolate and did lots of hugging … and a little bit of happy-crying. Here we are just before leaving for the wedding:

Lily was dressed in head-to-toe Gap. I found her dress, shoes and hair flower at separate times, all part of separate collections. Because I like to make things difficult for myself. Really, I just got lucky. Everything was on sale and everything matched.

Peep toes!

Unwrapping a photo-bribery Starburst candy:

Lily LOVED her little basket of flower petals. In fact, during the photos after the wedding, she was so determined to keep them from fluttering out of her basket in the breeze that she rammed her hand in there and WOULD NOT BUDGE. Seriously. In every photo with the flower girl, one of her little hands is clutching the basket by its handle while the other one is stiff-arming those petals into place.

Silly Lily lives up to her nickname in this shot (and isn’t Marc handsome?):

After lots of dancing and waaaay too much sugar:

We had such a wonderful weekend. Sophie stayed behind with my folks, and we sure did miss her. But it was such a treat to spend special time with Lily and Marc. Brought back memories of our days as a little threesome.

And, for the record, after refusing to walk down the aisle alone during the rehearsal, Lily sailed down by herself during the wedding. Like a boss.

Hope your long holiday weekend was lots of fun. I’m ready for another one!
